A Crazy Few Days Ahead NC 11-25-13

The next 72 hours are going to be crazy.  We'll see a mixed bag of precip including freezing rain, sleet, heavy rain, then snow.  It should make for a nightmare for Turkey Day travel plans.  Let's get to it!

Today is the calm before the storm.  Continued cold will be accompanied by increasing clouds.  Look for snowmaking at the ski areas to continue all day.

An area of low pressure will track up from the Gulf Coast and through the Carolinas on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Precip looks to arrive tonight in the form of mainly a wintry mix.  Tomorrow morning could be a little sketch on the roads.

Tomorrow looks absolutely miserable.  It will give new definition to the phrase “cold rain”.  Temperatures will still be chilly, but just warm enough to support rain, and it's going to rain…alot.  This system has a ton of moisture with it.  Rain totals tomorrow look to be rather impressive, with 2-4″ of QPF expected.  Luckily, since it's been so dry lately flooding isn't expected to be that big of an issue.

Temperatures will fall Tuesday night and we'll see a transition back to a freezing rain/sleet mix before we see a final changeover to all snow by Wednesday morning.  Snow showers continue all day Wednesday and into the nighttime hours.  Accumulations look to be in the 1-4″ range with higher amounts near the NC/TN border in the usual favored locations.

As crazy as Tuesday and Wednesday will be, Thursday through Saturday will be that uneventful.  Sunny conditions will return but we will continue to see temperatures more remiscent of January.  Each day will see temps bumped up several degrees.
