Rain Today, Colder Later This Week WV 12-17-12

A cold front will cross through the region tonight. Expect showers to ensue this afternoon and last through early tomorrow. A brief changeover to snow is possible early tomorrow for the higher elevations but nothing significant is expected.

High pressure briefly settles in late tomorrow. Clouds will be on the decrease in the late afternoon and temperatures will be much cooler than today, but near normal for this time of year. Winds will be rather breezy though. Wednesday will see abnormally mild temperatures briefly return and a good bit of sunshine.

A very strong cold front will pass through the region on Thursday. Widespread showers during the day will changeover to snow showers at night once colder air arrives behind the front. Significant accumulations are not expected at this time but a couple inches are possible for the favored locations.

This frontal passage thankfully arrives at a perfect time for the ski areas. Several days of snowmaking will make for much improved conditions for the Christmas holiday. Friday looks especially chilly with lingering snow showers.  The weekend will be sunny but still on the cold side. If you’ve planned a ski trip for Christmas, you can breathe a sigh of relief!
