Snow and Bitter Cold NC 12-21-12

Hello winter!  Today is the first day of the 2012/2013 winter season and boy has it arrived with a vengeance!  A cold front moved through last night and shockingly colder temperatures quickly moved in behind it as did the snow.  High winds and snow showers will persist today thanks to northwest flow.  It’s going to be a great day to stay inside.

Snow showers should taper off overnight and by tomorrow morning we are looking at totals ranging from an inch or so for the eastern locations to 4 or 5 inches for the higher elevations near the NC/TN line.  It’s going to be hard to get exact measurements though due to the persistent high winds.

Saturday will see clearing conditions, albeit windy,  and temperatures will still be on the chilly side.  High pressure will begin to settle briefly and Sunday will see things warm up a bit to more normal temperatures for this time of year.

We will be dealing with two separate disturbances next week.  The first will bring precip of the liquid kind to the region for Monday and Tuesday.  The second will move through later on Wednesday.  Cold air returns and more snow looks to be in our future for Wednesday night and Thursday.
