Grandfather Mountain Info

Grandfather Mountain is probably the most noticeable natural feature in our area. A large rock formation that is a part of the Blue Ridge Mountain range, Grandfather Mountain is a unique set of peaks and crests that naturally resembles an old man in different positions depending on the direction. The most popular view, and the one that most are familiar with, is the view from Hwy 105 traveling towards Banner Elk from Boone. The old man "Grandfather" is seen lying down from this angle, and you can make out his forehead, eyebrow, nose, mouth, and chin. Another, lesser known view is on a trail that leads to the peaks of Grandfather. One particular large rock face that you will pass by on the trail closely resembles a worn old man's face.

Forecast DiscussionIn Depth Overview

Last Updated: 02.22.12 08:58 AM

Warmer temps begin to invade the region today as wind flow will be from a southwesterly direction.  Mild, moist air will move into the area and by the afternoon, an upper level disturbance will pass overhead.  As a result of these two factors, rain showers will begin later this afternoon.  Isolated thunderstorms are possible as well.  Things will clear out overnight.

Tomorrow sees spring-like weather as that southwesterly wind flow continues.  We're going to see very mild weather and an abundance of sunshine.  If you're ready for spring, then you're going to love tomorrow as it's going to be a preview of it.

A cold front will move through early on Friday.  Showers begin Thursday night and will continue into Friday.  A few flurries on Friday night are not out of the question as colder air filters in behind the front.

High Temps on Saturday will be a good 20-25 degrees colder than Thursday and winds will be rather breezy.  High pressure settles back in so we'll see a return to sunshine and blue skies.  Sunday looks particularly nice as temps look seasonable and it will be a bluebird day at the ski areas.
